CLASS Descriptions
Intro to Windows – This is the beginning class. If you are new to computers or just want to know your way around the Windows XP operating system, this class is for you. We start with how to use the buttons on the mouse and continue with how to copy files, create folders, and navigate between multiple software applications.
Intro to Word – Generally this is the 2nd class that students take. Microsoft Word is one of the most used software programs available. This course covers all of the basics of Word 2003, with hands-on practice in creating and editing documents, inserting pictures, and copying and pasting.
Intro to Excel – This course is for anyone interested in learning more about spreadsheets. Spreadsheets are used to record any kind of numeric data. We will cover creating, editing, and formatting worksheets, using formulas to automatically calculate totals, and adding a graph or chart to your spreadsheet.
Intro to Typing Software – We now have three different typing software applications loaded on the computers in the lab. One of them is run over the Internet and the other two are the top two typing packages in the U.S. This hour-long class will show you how to get started with each of the typing applications so that you can use them in the open labs anytime you want.
Intro to eBay – If you are interested learning about selling on eBay, join us for this class.
Intro to Internet & Email – If you are new to email and don’t have much experience surfing the Internet, then this course is for you. You will learn about setting up an email account and using email functions such as forward and attachments. We will also discuss how to find what you want on the Internet and how to know if you can trust a Web site.
Intro to Outlook – Microsoft Outlook is very powerful personal management software. The primary function is email. You can set your computer up to use Outlook as your email software. In this way, your email messages are saved on your computer rather than on the server of your email provider. You can then organize your messages into folders and keep emails indefinitely on your computer for audit and tracking purposes. In this class, we will cover the email function of Outlook and other functions such as the calendar, daily to do lists, etc.
Intro to Project – This course is an introduction to Microsoft Project. This application is used to manage projects by tracking tasks and resources. If you are interested in learning how to more effectively manage your projects or have aspirations of managing projects, join us for this class.
Refresher in Windows & Word – This course is for those of you who have taken the Windows and Word courses before, but it has been a while. We will quickly review the basics of Windows and Word. This course will review the material in the Intro to Windows and Intro to Word courses.
Refresher in Word (cont’d) & Excel – This course is for those of you who have taken the Word and Excel courses before, but it has been a while. We will quickly review the basics of Excel and intermediate level topics in Word. This course will review the material in the Intro to Excel and the Intermediate Word courses.
Utilizing the Lab – This course is for those of you who have taken the Intro courses or have some computer experience. We have many new resources in the lab, with new ones being added all the time. In this hour-long class, we will go over what is available in the lab, how to set up a plan of study for yourself, and how to fully utilize the open lab times for self-paced study. If you are already comfortable with computers, then the open lab and this course are perfect for you.
Using CBT – CBT stands for Computer Based Training. One of the newest resources that we have in the lab is CBT software that has been loaded onto each workstation. This software walks you through training just as an instructor would, but it is self-paced. Once you know how to use the software, you can come to the open lab anytime to continue your training. Current topics include: Windows XP, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. More topics will be added in the near future, based on demand.
Do you want to be Certified ?????
We are in the process right now of installing software that will allow you to test your knowledge of the Microsoft Office products so that you may prepare for Certification Testing. Come in and see how much you know about Windows XP, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
What about the 2007 Version?????
In the next month or so, we will be loading the 2007 version of Office onto a couple of the computers so that you may start becoming familiar with it. Give Sheryl a call if you are interested in learning about this new (and very different) version of the software.
